Farmhouse Stonework Restoration

Our client lived in a farmhouse on the edge of one of the most exposed moors in the UK.

For years they had lived at the mercy of the prevailing winds and rain, having to use plastic containers to catch huge quantities of water that poured into the farmhouse during stormy weather.

This had caused multiple damp and black mould problems. The plaster never dried, walls couldn’t be painted and the house was not in a good condition.

The cause of this was identified by our team of experts to be the concrete based repointing to external walls. This had also suffered from freeze-thaw damage which compounded the problem by causing cracks to both pointing and stone.

Our team removed the incorrect pointing and cleaned the stonework using a DOFF machine. This is the only machine approved by English Heritage for cleaning stonework.

They then re-pointed the walls with traditional mature lime.

Inside the farm, the walls that had salts and mould on them were stripped back to stone and repointed with traditional lime.

The results

It is over a year since the work was carried out and the property is dry with no water ingress during stormy weather. The internal walls repointed with lime are dry and have no salt deposits or mould.
